What's In Your Bag: 2021 Edition
What does your bag say about you?
Do you ever come across an old handbag of yours – perhaps it’s a little dusty from having been stowed away in your closet for months, years even – and when you start cleaning it out, you’re flooded with a treasure trove of memories from some time long gone? I love cleaning out my old bags, especially those from BK (before kids). In them, you might find old business cards from contacts you lost touch with, fun lipstick shades you once wore, a receipt from your favorite brunch spot, or if you’re lucky, a flirty note from that guy you never called.
If I uncovered a bag of mine from 2021, what might I find? Would I find a spare mask? A dried-out pack of Clorox wipes? Surely a near empty, sample size bottle of hand sanitizer. Or maybe, tucked away in an old hardcover book, I’ll find my covid vaccination card – perhaps used as a bookmark to keep the place in a book I read in 2021, because that was the year reading became one of my top quarantine/pandemic activities. Of course though, if we’re talking about my “mom bag”, well I would definitely find all of the above, plus perhaps an empty bag of diaper wipes, a Star Wars lego toy (or two), baby socks, and probably an old parking ticket.
Our forgotten bags are time capsules to the past – they have the power to evoke more than just memories of what you did, but also how you were feeling at a given moment. I’d like to think that on a random Wednesday, in the far future, when I’m cleaning out a bag I toted around in the year 2021, that I’ll be transported back to an uncertain time with some fond memories. And future me, well, she’ll remember that sunny day she had lunch al fresco with her blogging bestie Ayzia, when she indulged in a fascinating read over a colorful mocktail – and she’ll certainly remember feeling so grateful and privileged after getting the shot.
