4 Things to Do to Get Your House Summer-Ready

Wow, what a hot, hot, hot week!

Anyone else having a blazing hot summer prelude? Here in the Northeast, we got hit with a heat wave in the 90s after Memorial Day. I suppose this is where we start inserting all the jokes about hating boy bands, right? As such, this marks the unofficial start to summer and I’m here to share a friendly reminder that now’s a good time to get your home ready for the hottest months of the year.

Your home will need additional maintenance to keep it functioning smoothly through any heat waves, so my biggest advice would be to get those preparations in order early on. As homeowners in New Jersey for the last 7 years, I can vouch for how doing so truly helps break down your energy bills, improve the efficiency and the life of your home, as well as increase the overall safety of your property for you and your loved ones. Below are a few tips to get your home summer-ready:

1 // Check Drains and Gutters: Although this is often a neglected item on homeowners’ summer checklists, it is one of the very first tasks you should actually be doing right now. Debris, such as mud and leaves, can clog the drain. Once it piles up, it can lead to huge problems and leaks that may occur within the roof and walls of your home. Clearing drains and gutters right away reduces the risk of any water damage that could happen later, so it’s why it should be one of the first things you do this summer. While you're clearing away the debris, look at your drains to see if the pipes are also leading the water away from your home. Have trenches dug and underground pipes installed to direct the roof water away from your property. You should also ensure that your landscaping is slanted away, as well.

3 // Inspect Your Yard: When preparing your home for summer, keep in mind that your yard has likely taken a beating after the winter. Look into checking out if you have any rotting trees, or try to treat the ones that need to be saved. You can also add a few decorations to refresh your space including planting new flowers along the length of your driveway, hanging potted plants near your front door, or investing in ways to keep your grass looking green and lush throughout the summer even if you experience drought.

4 // Look into Deck and Patio Upkeep: Pavers, decks, and driveways all need maintenance from time to time. Fix any broken joints or stonework that needs sealing. Check your deck and any handrails that need staining or sealant to protect them from splintering, decay, or insect damage. Once those are repaired, refresh your space by upgrading your deck furniture, adding an outdoor rug, and decorating with colorful pillows for fresh summer vibes for you and guests.

Needless to say, home is where the heart is, and having it ready to welcome a new season is worth doing. Having properly insulated windows, proper plumbing, and a well-functioning HVAC system can help lower your utility costs during the hot months, as well as keep you comfortable both outside and inside your home. Do your best to tackle these items before the summer weather gets too extreme and you need to spend more time cooling off indoors. And don’t forget — hiring a professional is always worth it if it saves you time or ensures the job is done right.
